I must say it was quite an eventful evening last night, seen my first three bears and had two unsuccessfull stalks. I did know one spot however, an old logging road where I usually see a number of blackies in the spring time. As I parked my truck on the side of the main access, I took my APA Black Mamba 7.5 bow out of its case, it's set at #80, fixed my quiver to it which contained 28" Beman MFX tipped with 125 grain Slick Trick standard broadheads. I have recently been introduced to FOBS and they were on my arrows, pink ones.
Something I like to bring with me is my rangefinder because the last thing I want to do is to wound a black bear and having it chasing you through the bush $*%& YIKES !!!!!!! LOL After walking approximately a mile and a half, I spotted what seemed to be the outline of a head and ears in the willows ahead of me......WOOOO, I stopped, took my range finder and after focusing on a aspen tree not to far away from the outline, it ranged at 105 yards. I very slowly walked backwards to the edge of the willows bushes and knelted down, observing what seemed to be the outline of a bear. HOLLY MOLLY it moved and it was a bear. At this point, I was looking around to see if there weren't other bears like cubs, nothing, the sound of my heart beat was getting louder as teh seconds went by. I very slowly took an arrow out of my quiver, nocked it and clipped my release on my ultra nok and waited to see what the bear was going to do. The wind was working for me as I felt a slight breeze on my face and knew the bear would be making its way towards me. No, I don't have any scent cover on me or any type of camo, just my old trusty green set of coverall, plus I have lots of Deep Woods bug spray on too ....LOL Guess I can be called a canadian red neck out hunting black bear ![]() Now, I can see the bear weaving through the edge of the willow / Black spruce tree line and as it got to approximately 60 yards, it stopped, sat down and was smelling the air, his head was bobbing up and down trying to wind me. I have to say this, it ( his head was getting pretty wide ) appeared to be a boar, short shout and wide shoulders. My breathing is getting shorter and I have to remind myself not to move. **** Note - anything that is walking towards you that is called a bear looks alot bigger than it really is, believe me !!!!!!! After about 4 minutes, the bear walks in the bush and all I can hear is branches cracking....he's getting closer. I spotted a shooting lane 40 yards away from me, where the willows stopped and where stood a really big black spruce. I thought I could see movement just behind that spruce tree and I was right, the bear was trying to see what or who I was and we played hide and seek for what seemed to be a lonjg time, 4 to 5 minutes. The area where the bear was walking was slightly lower than the area I was in so in my mind I was telling myself, bend at the waist Dan, make sure you bend at the waist, release and don't move !! You may have some running to do and a major scrap on your hands !!!! Suddenly, I seen his head stick out in the shooting lane and as he looked my way, I could see a nice white V on his chest, again, he stops, tries to wind me by moving his nose up and down, now at that point, I'm ready and hoping he doesn't run across this rather small opening......no, he very slowly starts walking and as I can see his lung area come in the open, in one motion, I drew, set my single pin on the spot, I seen my arrow dissapear in the shoulder/lung area, I could see my pink FOB in his hair and he stumbled and bolted in the bush, I could hear some loud crashing and again I was telling myself not to move an inch.....a few minutes later, I heard the death moan and with a big sigh of relief. I had a moment of sadness and accomplishment, my knees and upper body started to shake and I was still quite very nervous. I slowly went back to the truck to get my back pack that contained my knives, rope, tarp and all and 30 minutes later, I returned to find blood everywhere, leaves, willows, twenty five yards in the bush laid my bear, a 200 lbs boar, it was 20:35. I was estatic and I could not find my arrow. I was shaking my head looking at the entrance and exit wounds, the arrow did indeed go through both shoulder blades and made a complete pass through. I'll make sure to take my time and show you these pictures later on today or tomorrow. After pacing and ranging the shot, I calculated the shot being at 37 yards. Slick Trick....pretty amazing....pics next ![]() Daniel |
