Default Montec

Joel,
Can you tell us the process in making a Montec? Since it is all one piece injected I am curious about how it's done.

Also, how many re-sharpening s before you really start to effect the weight?

Another sharpening question......Whats the reason for sharpening side to side? I talked to a guy today that said he sharpens his front to back even though it isnt the "correct" way.

I do not work for G5 or am not associated in any way but I am an engineer and do know the process about how injection molding works.

They will cut a negative impression mold in which to inject the carbon steel into. This essentially means that for example the montec broadhead would be subtracted from the mold space or in other words if you were to but the g5 inside a box then subtract the montecs profile from the inside of the box it would leave you with an impression of the montec head. That empty space will be injected with the molten carbon steel and then cooled down so the steel can harden. Then the mold is opened up and the head taken out then the process begins all over again.

Most injection molding processes are done on a very big scale maybe injecting 8+ heads at once under immense pressure.

I just gave a quick over view of a generic injection molding process but I don't think that it will be that far off from what they do. It at least puts a concept in your head.

Default How do we choose ?

So Honestly guys what's the best g5 fixed blade ? I hear its the striker because of the replacement blades but can't you resharpen the montec cs? I also like the fact that the montec cs is a 1 piece head . I don't know if someone who's used both can explain which is better and for what reason I would very much appreciate it . Also would like to know if either is noisy in flight, which is easier to tune, and do they rust up easily?

Default montec

Well I have shot both. I think personally I like the strikers better. They are really sharp right out of package. For someone not all the great at resharpening it would be easy to just replace blades.
I got great flight out of both heads no real tuning issues for either head.

I think the holes where bigger and better blood trailers out of the strikers as well.

If re sharping isn't a problem for you either head would be a great choice. As far as rusting up I really never had any issues. I blow my stuff off with air gun if hunting in rainy misty weather.

hello
I was shooting the Montec today for the first time
no noise (montec SS), very easy to resharp, very impressive the first cut with original sharpening.
I was shooting it on a big amount of not fine grind construction sand, it looses the point and the sharpness, but no damage to the blades: it is so tough I think it's almost impossible to bend the blades or critically damage them

I am sure they will be my choice for hunting, for the compound and for the traditional bow

Both are great heads. I would use either one, but if the choice was presented I would choose the striker. Very easy to change blades if you were in a bind. Sharpening is easy on the both of them in my opinion as well. They both fly great too! You can't go wrong with either head.

Sorry we crowded in on your thread here Booner, but I had to give my 2 cents.

Take a look..... after almost 150 shoots into the sand, hitted by a WASP Hammer on back, 3 times on a wall...... it's still accurate!!!!

Default Montec

I have used Montes SS in 125 and 100 gr and now am using 100 Gr CS. I have killed fallow deer, red stag, and whitetails with no problems what so ever. I was really amazed to drop a huge red stag in his tracks with a spine shot. I did likewise on a large whitetail but the 100 gr SS montec I shot him with did crack one of the blades. I have switched to the CS because they are sharper out of the pack and can be sharpened to shave. The Montec SS and most other SS blades made in US do not get sharp enough to shave like good carbon steel does. They will rust if not taken care of. I have not had a rust problem.

I have not tried the Striker but hear good reports. Personally, I prefer one piece all steel. Especially when they are as strong as the Montecs. I have had numerous replaceable blades come off or break off when they hit a bone. None of those were G5.
