Guys,
How do you go about fooling a deer's nose? Do you make your own scent elimination or do you buy? Is it worth it all the effort or do you just hunt the wind? I have always hunted the wind but sometime the wind is so inconsistent that you cant do it. I collect zebra dung thats bone dry while walking in the veld. I then brake the dung in small pieces and burn them. Had good results last year. Just make sure you have enough to last the day...

don't spend one second or penny with scent elimination. All day long i keep checkin wind predictions and come up with where i'm gonna hunt. i'm just glad weather.com doesn't charge you per hit

I consider myself to be a fanatic when it comes to scent control. Heck, I'm probably nuts for what I do. But here goes:
* Shower in AM with unscented soap. * Dress in unscented clothing (everyday types). * Drive to hunting area. * Pick hunting area based upon wind direction on Weather.com * Change clothes down to underwear (keep them on) and put on hunting clothes. * Spray down with homemade scent killer. * Pick out a tree, climb up, and HUNT. But Weather.com doesn't work too well for the areas I hunt sometimes so if the wind shifts for the period (AM or PM) that I'm hunting, oh well, I'm pretty scent free. * At end of day or if I'm moving locations, I change back to my regular clothes. * Wash hunting clothes every couple of hunts, possibly every time depending on if I sweated or if I killed something. While this is a bit nuts, I've had fairly good luck with this routine. David

im with doe commander i play the wind. iv killed some of my best deer nice and stinky fresh from work. not to be rude but i have watched more huntin shows than i can count where the hunters have the best sent blockin gear that money can buy and they still hunt the wind, and when the wind changes they get busted, so i figure whats the point of spendin all the money when ill still have to play the wind. sorry if that came out wrong.

Scent Lok stuff I found didn't work for me. What I do that works, have had many deer directly downwind from long to short distances is
1) Wash all clothes, gloves, bags, release etc. in no scent soap + baking soda and air dry outside for a week or more. Leave it out in the rain. 2) Afterwards place them in a airtight bag or tub with HS earth scent wafers + leaves and so forth together in the tub. 3) Trim hairs on body, most smell comes from the bacteria that is on the hairs. Just try it. Then wash in Irish Spring non scented soap. That's about it, sometimes brush with baking soda and place apple slice in my mouth. Oh don't forget the bow, boots, stand, stuff like that. |

The property i hunt the wind swirls constantly. People think i'm crazy, but it does. In every hallow, on every ridge, the wind will shift 180 degrees ten times a day! This is the biggest impediment to my dad and I's hunting success i believe.....
We've tried the sprays, and such but with the wind the way it is, we are pretty much screwed until calm days......

Here is a thread that was just posted on "Deer and Deer Hunting" site on using baking soda. I do some of it but not everything he does. I wash my clothes in baking soda and store them with some more. I also use scent control clothing and scent killing sprays. Have not been busted for years.
