Default Tips for Judging Deer on the Hoof

Ok, there's alot of you folks out there that are really good at judging the age of deer on the hoof. I'm sure I'm not the only one but I have a heck of a time telling the difference between some of them while in my stand. So what tips, tricks, or general things can you tell me to help tell one year from another?

David

Well one thing i use is looking at there belly if it sags hes prolly an older deer and you can look at a deer and if it seems like his head goes straight into his body hes mature, old bucks tends to have short thick necks and you can obviously tell by there Racks to and just the way they act in general, hope this helps!!!

Bowhunter is right. A mature buck in most cases will have a shorter looking neck due to him being more filled out than a young buck. Younger bucks are slim through the neck and shoulders with hardly any thickness through their body to their rear.

Also older bucks have what appear to be more rounder noses, some call it a Roman nose. It makes their heads look shorter but is is mainly due to being more full faced than anything.

When you see one that looks like his chest is hanging between the joints on his front legs as he comes to you your looking at a hoss. The young ones coming in look like their legs are long sticks and their chest blends in with the body at the base of the neck. They don't ahve much brisket at all.
