Default Question for you "experienced" fellows....

Ok, here is the deal. I have only been shooting for going on 4 years now. I have read half the internet on how to tune this that and the other, not to mention several books on archery and such. Just my way of familiarizing myself with the intricacies of things I pursue. I really can't do anything just a little bit, in other words.

So for most of this time I have simply been working to keep my form in check, keep my bow tuned and keep my arrows hitting the proper place when I trip the release. This summer my project time switched to increasing my FOC. I usually shoot a 29" 340 FMJ with a 100gr Magnum or Razor Trick on the end, and fletched up with Blazers, and they come in right at 470grs and will trot on out there at 270fps.

My new arrows are 29" 300 FMJ's, sporting 3" Easton vanes, and a 100gr brass insert for a total weight including the 125gr heads of 600grs. Now these do run a bit slower than the above mentioned ones, but only about 30 or so FPS.

So I am out shooting them for the second time and still getting the sight set up for the longer ranges, when I notice they appeared to be flying downrange at about a 45 degree angle. What was even more puzzling is that I could easily see the whole side of the arrow as the vanes turned it round and round, but when I headed to the target they were all stuck right straight in as if flown there on a string.

I have had issues with seeing the fletching under different lighting that made them look like they were flying weird but never this. Granted there was a slight cross wind, and some canting is to be expected. However with 275grs up front pulling it along one would think it would fly pretty darn straight, right?

Any logical explanation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Oh yea, if it matters I am running them out of a 09' Admiral set to a 28.5"DL, using a QAD drop away rest, and the bow is set to 70#

Have you tried shortening your FMJ by an inch, reason is I have a Dangerous Game FMJ set up 27.5" arrow length, 100 brass insert and 150 grain Red Feather Archery Phoenix boadhead / 84# bow and they fly like darts. I did have them at 29 inches when I first started tuning them and they did exactly what you are describing in your post, I cut 1/2 inch off at a time and test shot the arrow until I had a gorgeous flight.

If you have a fletching tool, take feathers/vanes off and cut a half of an inch at a time and I bet you'll see a major improvement in your arrow flight.

Thanks Standing Bear, I might give that a try. I am not sure I can get a full inch off as they are only about that far out in front of the rest, but can get a half inch for sure possibly three quarters.

I might give it a try on one this weekend. I was headed to the country tonight, but found out yesterday I may have to work tonight and again tomorrow morning. So that will give me time to mess with one and have it ready for testing tomorrow evening.

I got some hogs to practice on tomorrw evening after we get up there. They have been making routine daily trips to the peach tree in my mom's backyard there. It might be rough sitting on the back porch in a comfortable chair with a cold drink waiting on them to show up, but I think I might be able to handle it. LOL
