Default Cigarette smoke, does it affect....

the animals you hunt or the clothes you wear. I personally know of a gentleman that snokes in his tree stand and shoots his deer every year. I just can't seem to get my heard around that. Does tobacco scare away your game? We have a independent wall tent set up where we keep all of our hunting clothes in and this guy that smokes just kept laughing at us shaking his head. How does he do it, I don;t know but perhaps someone could enlight me on this one.

All we see on the hunting shows is scent killers and their importance, whouldn;t we be following this trend?

All I can tell you is that many of the old guys I hunted with when I was a young man smoked and it never seemed to bother them on seeing deer. Of course in those days we couldn't smell the smoke in the woods because we were around it all the time.

I also remember one of the guys who would always build a small fire by his feet to stay warm and the deer would come in looking for the source.

Now I can smell a smoke at a great distance because I am never around it, but I do not think it really bothers the animals Must be better that buring zebra dung in Africa per another post by Gerhard.

My dad used to smoke Tipporilo cigars. He swore everytime he light one up a deer come to him like it were on a sting! He said they almost seemed curious.

Well there was a great debate on another forum about this going on yesterday. Like you many folks just can't get their head around a deer, any deer really, but especially an older buck being taken by someone who smokes.

Well unfortunately I have the terrible habit. Has it effected my hunting, I couldn't honestly say. I have gotten up and done the scent free shower wash spray down till I was wet, and been busted. I have also been sitting in a ground stand, and had deer walk right up to it while I was holding a lit on in my hand and the smoke blowing right at them. My pop, and uncles all smoked and they took deer every year with rifles, mostly at ranges less than 50yds.

I honestly believe that the wind is the important thing to consider no matter what. I think that deer smell it, and will react to it, but they react individually. IF one freaks out they will spook others close by.

Since I have been bow hunting the past couple of years, I have tried to limit my smoking to times when I am out of the woods and out of my hunting clothes. I have also showered with scent free products before heading back out. I still hunt the same areas in the same fashions, and have had deer up just as close so I couldn't be honest in the fact that one is better, but in my mind I think it helps.

Bingo!

Neighbors shot a 145" 10 point with a bow while his cigaret smoldered on the ground. My dad was telling me the other day about some old timers that actually would smoke more hunting simply because they swore by it as a human cover cent. Now, let me clarify im not advocating that as a science, but in their defence, they small human and tear out, but when some one smokes alot, thats about all you can smell.

Very interesting I see what your saying and alot of people do smoke their close to rid them of human smell and i've seen more deer when i was smoking then not I've recently quit smoking so i'll be completly smoke free this year and i'll let you know the results! Although i think that 90% of it is wind direction and if the winds blowing their way your done! But i've also had deer come right to me while the wind was blowing right at em while i was smoking or just was Starting to think it is a masking scent but at what point do the deer realize that where there's smoke there's Humans?

Our neighbor gets out of his stand and lights a small fire every time he gets cold. I used to think he was nuts but he manages to get a nice deer every year... FWIW

this is a fact. the native americans would all gather around a fire in the smoke before they went hunting because it covered there scent. i mean think about it they used long bows and they had to get really close without the deer or whatever animal getting spooked. just though id throw that out there
