Default Caping your own mounts

You know that is something that would be nice to have a pictorial on. Does anyone have any pictures on how to cape a animal, for a shoulder mount, lets say. If so, could you do a how to so that we could all learn how to prepare tha cape in the field, ex.: going around the eyes, nose etc...

Just make sure that before you begin the caping tht you taek measurements from the edge of the eye to the end of the nose and taek 2 measurements of the neck. One right behind the ears around the neck and one about half way down the neck. This helps the taxi to determine what size form to use.

When I get another deer I will show you how I do it for my mounts. But I basically start at the shoulders and just skin it leaving it all connected and one piece, I do this all the way down to the base of the skull where I sever teh spine and take the head off. This leaves the entire neck and shoulder region in tact so the taxidermist can make it suit their needs. It makes it easier on them and then I don't have to worry about making a wrong cut.

But I would like to see how they do the entire process.

Per the request of SB, let's stick this around a while. We'll sticky this thread for those seeking instructional information regarding subject heading.

Default Right On

As a professional taxidermist myself, it is nice to see a good video illustration on how to perform this task. Not only did they show the general caping up to the base of the skull by not cutting up the back "preferred", but they did a good job of illustrating caping out the face. The biggest mistake people make is nicking holes in the cape around the eyes, nose, and mouth. Even with this video it will require some practice to do it correctly, so practice on smaller deer that you are not going to mount, or does minus the around the antler skill, which is not that tough compared to the rest. The capes you practice on that turn out good or ok can still be sold to taxidermist looking for smaller capes or ebay, this should at least pay for your permits!!!!! Bottom line is it takes practice otherwise it is going to cost you more at the taxidermist for repair costs and unsightly holes that cannot be totally repaired due to hair that is cut. As a taxidermist, speeking for other taxidermist, this would cut down on our time if it is done right, keep spoilage to a minimum and transport easier, BUT, PLEASE take the time to practice on other deer, you do not want to ruin your once in a lifetime mount or have to buy a different cape because you did it yourself. Any questions or comments feel free to email me, actaxidermy at hotmail dot com as I don't have the time to check this post often. thanks

The neck measurements are taken after the hide has been pealed up to the base of the ears. That is what you mean isn't it?

It's been a long time since I practiced any taxidermy but as I remember all the measurements were taken before skinning.
