Now that's just simply impressive. This should be part of every beginning hunter's training program. I might print this, frame it, and put it on my son's wall.

![]() While living in AK I hunted with a lot of military guys. Since I'm prior military and my wife still is I was around them a lot and we hooked up for hunting all the time. Now these guys were good deer hunters and good bowhunters but were loosing a lot of bears. The reason was they were trying to shoot them like deer. The info being passed around was to shoot them just like deer. There is one big difference between carnivore and ungulate anatomy in regards to shot placement and that it the forelimb is further forward on canivore's in regards to the thoracic skeleton. If you are shooting the shoulder line you are at the rear of the heart on a broadside deer and right in front of it on a broadside bear. Quartering away shots on bears using the same structural landmark for shot placement often resulted in one lung hits and many times just a shot through the "armpit" as there is about 5-6" between the humerus and ribcage on an adult black bear. So if you want to heart shoot a deer, go through the tricept muscle but on a bear center it about 2-3" behind the shoulder line. You can use the same reference of the shoulder line, just don't shoot it the same. I'll get the hog and turkey done and up this spring. I haven't had time to overlay the pictures yet.

Wow, thanks Woody. Never having hunted bear before, I would have not known that. I will show this to my buddies who have hunted bear in the past to see if they were aware of the differences. When asked/shown, I'm sure they will all say, "oh yeah, I knew that." Isn't that the way most people are.
![]() Thanks again for posting these.
