Default My boy scored!!!

Its been tough hunting, we couldnt get on a deer in the youth deer season. Had a few close but needed a few more steps for a clear shot. We have been out almost everyday since the opener. I picked him up from school yesterday and we headed strait out to our blind. After sitting for about an hour he was bored and wanted to go, so I explained to him how you just have to keep scanning for deer at any moment one can pop out. 15 min later one stepped out from the woods 90yds away. I pointed and said see patients pays off. He already had the gun on the shooting sticks, I told him if he wanted to take her wait till she is broadside cock the hammer settle in and squeez it off. Mean while Im concentrating really hard looking thru the video camera so I dont mess myself at the shot. I hear the gun go off sending out a 180 Hornady XTP and she dissapears, He yells out I got her!!! I looked up and she kicked a few times and was done. Thats when he felt his forst surge of adrenalin, as we walked up to her he was shaking like a leaf. He put an excellent shot on her. He handles the .44mag really well. The bullet took out her lungs and a few fragments hit her spine, the majority of the lead exited and I dug the mushroomed jacket out from the exit hole. The loads were loaded at a base load of 21grs. of alliant 2400. These shot really accuratly for a base load. It all made for a great first deer.

I know its a gun kill but its his first. He has been shooting his little bear compound but were not quite ready to hunt with it yet. Maybe next year. I think hes hooked, now he wants to try for a buck.

Congratulations. How old is your son? They always told me a youngsters attention span is one minute for each year they are old and after two kids and five grandkids I can tell you that it's true. Glad he hung in there and thanks for sharing with us.

Congrats to your little man! I love to see the kids getting out and hunting. My boy is still trying for his deer this year. No shots yet but maybe this weekend.

Thanks guys, its sure tough hunting on the ground. I knew the hard part would be getting the shot set up with out being seen. Hes 9. He showed some persistance, kept wanting to go out. Shot his first groundhog this spring with my AR-15 at 50yds. Hes a crack shot with the 44 groups 3" at 75yds off shooting sticks.

Excellent. I didn't get my Buck during early bow season so I too am hoping to get a deer during rifle season here in PA starting the Monday after Thanksgiving. I like to see the kids get into it. My 10 y.o. daughter has been showing interest.

That is what it is all about right there. Bow, rifle, shotgun, slingshot, doesn't matter. As long as you hunt. Congratulations little man.

That is awesome! It doesn't matter if it is gun or not. It is his first deer and it was with dad. It was after you told him to hang in there. It doesn't get any better than that! Congrats to the both of you!

.44 lever action or single action? No gun pics?

Nope forgot to put the gun in the pics in the midst of all the excitment, my bad. He used a scoped single shot New England Handi rifle. We might head back out to look for some ivory today..

Awesome! I can remember waiting for my dad to come home from hunting to see if he got anything and when I finally got a chance to go he was there for my first deer. A great memory for you both to enjoy for a long time! Congratulations!
