Went out friday evening had some does come in but it was too dark to shoot. With the gun season ending sunday we headed out saturday evening. We had a good wind for our brush blind. Last light few does filtered out of the woods, he had one in the scope but couldnt get a good shot. Few min later seen a buck skirting the edge of the woods about 130yds away. All hopes were gone then the buck circled and showed up 50yds in front of us. I said right there!!! He gOt on him i stopped him with a eeerp and the hammer dropped. He did the classic mule kick and took off. We backed out and got flashlights and took up the trail. The buck went about 120yds, dressed out at 175lb 15"wide 9pt.. He was slightly quartering to us, the bullet took out his lungs and liver. I recovered the bullet inside the hide on the offside. This deer was the icing on the cake for the season.

Sweet, that is a nice sized deer! Is that a Handi rifle or Rossi in .243 maybe?
My son had a double yesterday, took a small 7 point and then a doe a few minutes later. He was texting me asking if he could take her too and she obliged by staying around for 5 minutes and he shot her also. He shot both with a .243 and neither had exit wounds. Both deer were dead right there (DRT) and never took a step. Anyway, I have been impressed with the .243 on the 4 deer it's taken. Last edited by MLN1963; 11-28-2011 at 08:18 AM. |

What kind of bullets are you using in the .243. I have used one for years and always get good pass through inside 100 yds, and even out to 200 yds if the shot placement is really good. I use the Remington Swift Scirocco bullets. They really lay the hammer down on deer.

Remington Express Cor-Lokt 100 grain (always in stock at WM). I'm not complaining about no exit wounds, I think expending 100% of the energy internally is optimum. We have had pass thru on one long shot at approx 225 yards. Only one deer of the 4 has moved (30 yards) and it was a high lung right at the diaphragm (this is the same 225 yards shot). The other 3 were dead right there (DRT).
Too many of my friends think they need a 7mm mag or 300 win mag to shoot whitetail deer. I think it is funny when they complain that their deer's guts are liquified when they make a good forward shot. I guess they have never heard of hydrostatic shock

Were limited on caliber selection here in Indiana. Its a handi rifle in .44mag. I loaded up some 180gr hornady XTP's. His doe he shot got a pass thru at 90yds but i found part of the jacket in the exit.

Hes a pretty serious shooter for being so young. 44mag is pretty flat shooting. The gun hits 1"high at 50yds dead on at 75 and 2"low at 100yds. These loads were base loads for mild recoil. Gonna have a big taxi bill this year.
