My dreams always been to harvest a hog with a bow and my dad said next year he would take me for my 16th birthday. So I need advice on a good hog hunting arrow. I currently shoot gold tip xt hunters with a 100 grain tip. Around 350-360 grains at 62 lbs of ke and think that that is too light. what do you think would work best? I was thinking an easton fmj

The only complaint about the fmjs ive heard is that they can bend and once you have a bent arrow you might as well have a broken one. If you've had good luck with gold tip why not try to find something in thier kinetic line that would be a good fit for you?

I agree with Dsotm223, the Kinetic line woukd work great or any of the Axis line are awesome. Heck I used the GT hunters and even the Expeditions with an efficient 2 blade Bh and never had a broken arrow yet. I think its your shot placemet that will be your demise of an arrow not so much the arrow itself. One of the best bow hog killers I know shoots an old 60lb Mathews with GT hunters and Slick Tricks and he gets a pass thru probably 99% of the time .....on video to boot. Just need to be patient and let them turn a little and be confident in your placement.

The Wilderness is a good choice.
I took a hog there using X Weave Predator 200s weighing out at around 340gr tipped with 100gr Magnus Stingers w/63# KE. The first shot was a passthrough, but the follow up caught the opposite shoulder, and the hog rolled and snapped it. Like someone else said...shot placement. |

Gold Tip makes insert weights that will screw into the rear of your insert and will add almost whatever weight you want. This will also increase your FOC. The only drawback to this is you may, by adding, weight to the front get an arrow that is underspined depending on what you are shooting now. You can add these weights even with the insert glued in the shaft. I get my weights and a long allen wrech from Lancaster Archery Supply. The weights come in 10 20 and 50 grain sizes. They are a cheap and effective way to increase your FOC, a positive, and increase your arrow weight for better penetration. I added 150 grains to mine and they perform flawlessly. Each package comes with one size of weights and 12 weights each. If you need anymore info, just shoot me a PM.

I hog hunt a lot, just about every weekend. I am shooting Beman ICS with 100gr. MX4's. Total arrow weight with wrap is around 420 if I remember right.
Hog hunting with a bow is my thing, I enjoy it very much. I would rather shoot hogs than deer...When is the last time you had a deer squeeeeeeeeeeeelllllll when shot? I killed 2 hogs this morning and then just at dark I took a huge boar. Gave the 2 small hogs away but no one wants the boar so I guess I will be grinding meat after church to make breakfast sausage. |

With your arrow weight and ke you are probably ok. I like heavy arrows and shoot about 445 grains (beman 340s). I experimented with some fmjs with brass inserts once and got around 550 grains. They flew great but man did they drop. If you have to guess yardage this could be a real factor, which is one reason I decided to trash the fmjs I built and go back to my bemans. So something to think about before you go build a heavier arrow. What you have coupled with a 2 or 4 blade stinger or steelforce head should be fine.

Just realized you have RFA Phoenix listed as yout BH's........I'm not familiar with them but I am with similar heads and they are efficient enough to kill any hog as long as you put it where it counts. If you just use your patience and wait for that slight quartering away shot and slip it in the middle of the ribs, your current combo will work great. I wouldn't change a thing. I have killed several with Hellrazors ( all pass throughs) and from the looks, the RFA's are probably a better quality head.
It might even help if you watch plenty of my buddies hog harvests on you tube and study them til you know exactlt when to let an arrow fly. This guy is the most patient bow hunter I've ever watched. He'll pass up 10 shots that I would have taken just because its not the "perfect" shot he wants. To my knowledge , he hasn't lost a hog in 3 or 4 years . I'll post a link when I have time.

Well guys. This hunt is taking place April 5th At the Wilderness. In my quiver is my gold tips with a Magnus stinger 4 blades for shots within 30 yards and debating between G5 T3's or Grim Reapers for anything further.

Nice. I was checking that place out, thinking of heading there someday myself. Let me know how it goes. Are you going for the big boars?
