Default time to join the carbon shooters?

I was wondering what u guys think about this. right now, im down to 3 bolts for my crossbow. ive been shooting the horton aluminum xx75s for years. have been curious for awhile about carbons but never needed to really switch. im only shoooting around 214-220 and I'm worried about loosing too much punch. however id like to be able to have a flatter trajectory. right now I'm holding 10" high at 35 yds!

you guys/gals think id lose too much momentum/KE by going to a lighter arrow? I know that what I have will send a 3 blade muzzy through a 140lb deer @ 35 yds and send a slick trick mag through a 150lb deer and into the dirt from 20 yds.

is speed with flatter trajectory going going to outweigh that much penetration power? I missed the same buck twice this year due mostly to yardage mistakes. I feel that with a flatter flying arrow, he'd be on my wall!

right now my total arrow weight is 458g w 125g Slick Trick Mags up front. id like to stay with my 125s since everything I have is 125g. sorry for being long winded. hope you're still with me lol

have a good one!

Well a lighter arrow is always an option, I'm no expert in crossbows but I know that when I switched to carbon from aluminum with my bow I got better penetration due to the smaller shaft diameter, even in targets I had a two to three inch difference. They also shot much faster. Maybe find some fair priced bolts and try them, If you don't like them switch back.

Cabelas has a branded carbon arrow/bolt called the stalkers. They would be 425g total weight if I went that route. $30 for 6. KE would be around 48lbs momentum at 0.431 slugs - which on a side note, I have no idea what that number means n the real world. Just that my old setup produced 0.447slugs and performed as mentioned above. Id get arrow speeds around 227.

I just am afraid of loosing penetration with a lighter bolt. :/

Slugs is the actual measure of penetration I think? For thirty dollars its worth a try if you decide to switch back then you have six arrow for bh testing or small game.

I use Horton MX Aluminum Bolts out of my Horton Crossbow. I like the heavier bolt and they apparently are tuned with the proper FOC for my set up.

I have considered carbon but have not found one heavy enough for my taste. I'm shooting a 20" bolt and most carbons I found are under 10g per inch.

Not to throw you to the archerytalk wolves but if you check out their crossbow section I'm sure Moon and a few of the guru's over their could set you on the right path. Moon I know has a extensive knowledge and experience with crossbows and arrow set up. He is a pretty good guy too.

I know one way you could get the weight you want would be to add a brass insert. It is heavier and increases your FOC. I know a lot of crossbow shooters and traditional guys use them as long as you get your spine correct.
