Now this is one hot topic but I thought of bringing it up here so that we could get the people that design, build and test broadheads to share their experiences.
First off, I would like to as Woody of Magnus if he could find and post the picture of one of their broadheads tests going through the side of a moose rib, I think the picture was taken in 2007. Plus I found his explanation of what was needed to effectively penetrate and follow up with slicing thru the vitals very informative. Should you have already shot a moose with any type of broadhead, please feel free to chime in and share with us how your broadhead worked. For me, I shot one moose with a snuffer and got a complete pass thru, I was shooting a 75 lbs recurve and the shot was at 17 yards. The other moose I harvested was shot using a 2 blade journeyman broadhead and there again I got a complete pass thru although the shot was a very close one, two yards ( was I worried, shaking, nervous, excited ) you betcha !!!!!! |

I love moose hunting! I need to go again soon. I killed my bull a few years ago with a Wensel Woodsman out of my longbow. The BH was just sticking out the other side after some diagonal travel. The bull did not last long and I got a nice hole in him. I was amazed at how tough their hide was when I was skinning him. I could not poke the point of my knife through it, had to slice with a serrated blade. That Buzzcut might work nice on them!?

longbow42, I've heard good things about the wensel woodman's broadhead and that is why I can't wait to try my luck using the Red Feather Archery 150 grain Phoenix this fall. The custom Red Feather Archery arrows that Stan made me are tipped with the Phoenix and I must say, they fly absolutely great with my Brackenbury Non Typical longbow. The clock is ticking.........
Congrats on your moose too

I would love to hunt a moose, but I have a feeling that won't happen for a while. I think the hellrazor, snuffer, monotec, RFA phoenix, and probably any 2 blade fixed head would do the job.

richa3md - I know of a bowhunter that went to the NWT/Yukon border last year and successfully stalked and shot a huge bull moose with a NAP razorback broadhead. the one thing that made me smile is when he was all upset about not having found his arrow in the caribou lichen
![]() 05_sprcrw - I do want to wish you the greatest of moose hunts when you will get the chance to go, these animals are impressive to say the least and so darn huge !!!! I'm sure any of the broadheads you mentioned would do the job if put in the right place. 220@NAP - Now that is one tough decision but after seeing a few of them being brought down with thunderheads in the region of Matachewan in Northern Ontario, I know my decision would be leaning towards the edge. Not that the hellrazor wouldn't get the job done, as seen on Archers Choice but you know, the added serration would certainly work in your favour with these very large critters. Plus, I heard that Maine had a really good moose population ![]() ![]()
