Default Which COC head???

A few years ago I replaced the no longer made 125gr Rocky Mny Ironhead (sad to see that head go) with a bunch of 125gr Montecs. I have killed a bear and a deer with the Montecs and they have performed well, I really like the one piece cut on contact design. My only issue is I can not sharpen them to my liking. I have used several methods and the best I have found is wet/dry sand paper to 1000grit then stropping with yellow stone. I am looking at switching to the CS Montec, Hellrazor or Snuffer SS. My question is simple, which one of these heads has the best steel for a razor edge?

If you want to go down to 100 grains the RFA Pheonix is of similar size and has been getting lots of great press on lots of threads on this site. They are machined out of solid steel. If fact there are lots of great manufacturers and heads listed on this site to look at.

Out of those I do know the hellrazors are scary sharp out of the pack. I'm
not sure about what materials they are all made from though.

As bigboar stated the phoenix is a solid piece, tool grade. It would seem
pretty hard to destroy that thing. Sounds right up your ally.

Might add to that...Stan is working on a non vented 125 gr....

And like you ACLakey...I couldn't sharpen the Montecs just right for me also....Got the RFA Phoenix single bevel and get it the way I want it....lot easier for me

I can get the monotecs just right but it takes some time. Also I have noticed that most people have the head sharp but it doesn't feel as sharp as some thin blade, the thing you have to remember is there is more metal in the edge so it doesn't seem as sharp. This is a result of the angle of the blade grind.

I really like the phoenix however and will be shooting that for some time to come. I have no problems shooting that head at deer heck I would shoot it at a squirrel. There are not many heads I would be willing to try it with. I know the head can take the abuse and I know it will not take very much sharpening to get it back to hunting shape.

I have been very impressed with the Razor Trick cut on contact broad heads.

They come scary sharp out of the packet.

They fly great.

And one of the best things about them for me is that I can re sharpen them after shooting them in to a broad head budd.

They also make a huge hole.

Wildebeest I hunted last year dropped in 80 yards after being hit with a quartering double lung shot.

Thanks for the info. I am going to try the diamond stone method that is on youtube for the Snuffer SS heads.

My wet/dry sand paper and stropping method proved effective this weekend. My Dad shot a small buck at 20 yards uphill in the chest and the arrow exited the rear ham. The broadhead did some serious damage the the buck dropped after a few bounds, the head looked brand new. My buddy took a larger fork on a hard quartering shot which exited through the far shoulder blade, head had no damage and the buck dropped in site. Both heads I sharpened using the previous stated method. I guess they are sharper than they appear.

Ok, I purchased a double sided diamond stone the other day and went to work on some Montecs. I started with 600 grit, then went to 1200, finished with a few passes on the strop with yellow stone on it....the results. The Montec's now shave hair very easily, I am impressed. I don't know why this method works better than the sand paper method of the same grit, but it does. For a test, I held a ziplock sandwich bag between my hands and had my daughter let go of an arrow with a sharpened montec on the end. The results of the impromptu test was the arrow sticking in the book on the floor I used for a stop, these heads now cut with ease. I am anxious to give them a try on game....hopefully I can find an elk before the end of the month.

Its a "Micron count" the sand paper is more open and has less grit/abrasive material per square inch also the abrasive medium of the stone is more durable and more secure on the stone, so you are getting a sup-par finish on the edge with the sand paper.

Cool, glad you can sharpen them easy now! I find the Snuffer SS is easy to sharpen. Hellrazors are awesome sharp out of the pack, but I think they are little harder to get sharp compared to the Magnus Snuffer SS.

Thanks for the replies. Woody from Magnus has been a tremendous help even though I am not using his heads. His video and posts on another site were the ticket. I will be switching in the future to the Snuffer SS just do to the support I got from him on someone else's product.

Doesn't matter to me what head you shoot, if you need any help just hollar. That's why they don't let me handle sales, not that I would want to anyway.
