Hi guys just wanting to get your views on your broadhead choice for hunting Elk. Have the opertunity this time next year to go Elk hunting with my brother inlaw. Will be taking my Hoyt CRX 35 set at 65# at 30 inch draw. With Easton epics 340 and quickfletch quick spins. I can't wait to come over to the States and bowhunt Elk. But my broadhead choice has been hard to decide on. Any help would be great.

Id recommend a fixed blade as elk are extremely tough animals. Any number of fixed blades will do the job but the few ive had best experience with are the RFA Pheonix, Magnus buzzcuts, NAP Thunderheads, ADS Atom. Ive also heard good things about Silver Flames, and The new RFA Razor Hawk looks really tough.

I used the 100 grain Smoke Ramcat on a 345" 6x7 in Co that the guide estimated weighed close to 1000 #'s live weight. Complete pass thrus at 38 and 44 yards on this big bull. To me this is a sleeper of a broadhead and I was thoroughly impressed by the penetration. The second arrow at 44 yards passed thru and it went 20 yards up the hill behind the bull. I wiil be hard pressed to find a head to replace the Ramcat in my quiver.

I will add this as a personal observation. I really does not matter what BH you use as long as the bow is tuned and the BH and shot are in the right place. I think that when you get with a lighter weight poundage bow and lighter arrows you really need to look at the BH such as some of the 2 blades mentiond or a good solid 3 blade fixed head. If you are shooting a heavier weight bow, 65+ pounds and heavier arrows, 450+ grains and heavier, then you could probably use any head you wanted. Look at what I shoot with the 2 pass thurs I had on my elk. 560 grain arrows at 70 #'s with 89.89 KE, .64 momentum and heavy FOC, 18.9%. This an good shot placement is what lead to my 2 pass thrus and a downed elk. Remember, only 2 things matter when it comes to hunting with a bow, a good sharp broadhead and proper shot placement.

I had a complete pass thru on my bull elk and 8 point deer buck using the Swhacker 125 grain broadhead last week. These mechanical heads are the real deal.

I used Grim Reaper this year with great results. My buddy used Rage and put the bull down. I have also see Gators used with great results. Slick Tricks, RFA, Muzzy, and a long list of others are good too. Shoot straight and have confidence. Good luck.

I hunted elk last year in Colorado and I wouldn't have had any other head in my quiver than a RFA Phoenix. I know any sharp broadhead placed in the right spot will do the trick, but there is no convincing me that a broadhead made from a solid peice of steel is not superior to mechanical or other fixed broadheads with parts that can fail. The single bevel design penetrates like crazy to boot and if you have any questions or problems you can speak right to the man that makes them on this forum.
There is my .02 for what it's worth. Whichever head you choose good luck and get a big one!

I'd suggest whatever head you choose that you strive to tune your setup to handle broadheads that weigh at least 125grs.
The 100gr models will work on elk. But consider this. 25% more broadhead weight, means much more metal in the head and much more strength. It also improves your FOC. This not only helps broadhead flight, it also helps penetration and reduces deflection. |
