Default Complete pass tru or not?

Hi there.
First let me say how good it is for non american people to be able to discuss archery topics with people that know something about it.

I'm from Portugal and the bowhunting community is very small here (around 180 hunter's) so there are some things that are a true challenge to prove.

My question is: Is it good to get complete pass tru or not? Is it not a waist of kinetic energy that doesn't goes to the animal?

Our main game in bowhunting are wildboars, but they are really tuff with heavy bones. I keep breaking shafts on them and occasionally can get a pass tru.

Thank's

the advantage of a pass thru is the exit wound is generally larger than the entrance wound, and the arrow does not plug up the holes. This leads to a better blood trail to follow, if the animal travels far after the shot.

RiverBC nailed the response. I would much rather have the 2 holes for blood to escape, besode, if the arrow stays in, the shaft can hinder the blood loss outside the body for a better blood ground.

Welcome to BHT and as others have said I am a big fan of getting two holes so that you have more blood to follow.

I must say that there are a lot of different things a person can do to improve penetration. If you list your setup we would be able to give some ideas of other ways to improve penetration.

Passthrough is definately the way to go, however it is possible to kill and track/find game with only an entrance hole.

What you get is what you get, yes you can optimize your set up but largely it is a matter of shot placement IMO. Get your arrow tuned really well and shoot for both lungs; whatever does not come out the wound will come out of the mouth and nose.
Having an easy blood trail is great; but not having a lot of blood on the ground is no excuse for not recovering your animal.

Thanks.

My set up is:
Bowtech Destroyer 350, 71lb at 28,5 inch draw
Easton Axis Nano 400
Muzzy MX-3 100 grains
Total arrow weight - 458 grains
Speed - around 300 fps

I will be shooting VAP V1 350 with Grim Reaper Razortip 125 grains or RFA Phoenix 100 grains next month.

Sounds like you should have a pretty good setup, if it were me I would consider a .300 spine arrow the 350's may be a tad weak depending on how long you are cutting them. I put close to 200 grains on the front of my 350 grain arrows on my 60lb bow and I am a tad under spined as is. Granted I have a lot of point weight.

The other good thing about going to a 300 spine arrow is you will get a tad more durable arrow, and some more weight which will be great for added penetration and quieting the bow down is another positive side affect of more arrow weight.

Well, the thing is I've already ordered it. It takes a wile to arrive in Portugal and in Europe I couldn't find them...

I was thinking in cut them at 29, but maybe 28 would be better. Besides, with the outsert they wold be 29 since the outsert adds 1 inch to it!

What do you think?

That would work, I cut my vaps to 27" to have an overall 28" arrow with my 350's. I don't think you will have any issues with them as you are planning but they may be a little fragile, I don't have much experience with the vaps yet so I can't comment my axis nanos are super tough arrows and one of my all time favorite shafts.

People at Victory tell me to cut them bettwen 27,5 and 29.

Jason Balazs tells me to cut them at 29. Apparently he uses them at 29 on a Invasion CPX at 70 # and says they are great.

Honestly, I have no idea. I'll probably cut them at 29 and shoot them. Then if needed I'll cut them at 28!

eheh, definitively a plan. The thing is, in a country with 180 bowhunters, a lot of information/know how isn't available.

But there's always broadheadtalk...

Just remember how deep the Vap inserts sit .
If you glue them in and cannot remove them you may have to cut 1 1/2 off of the arrow ( or right behind the insert ) to shorten them !!!!
