Short Story - Grim Reapers kill deer
Long Story - Read Below This nice 8 point would show up on trail camera about every 7-10 days but mostly at night. I was hunting in his home area most of the year and only saw him one time and that was in mid October. On Dec 17th set up for the afternoon hunt at 3:30pm. I was on a bench that wrapped around a hardwood ridge. Deer started moving around me shortly after 4pm so I had my hopes up. At 5pm a string of 8 does appear on the bench about 70 yards away and they are hustling and looking back. At first I figured they may have been spooked by another hunter but I noticed two more deer coming out of the thicket. It was Crabman and a small 6 point. My kids had nicknamed him Crabman after seeing the trail camera pictures of his main beam and g3 which looked like claws. They were sparring and horsing around as they approached. It took them about three minutes to make it another 30 yards. I ranged the trail they were using at 41 yards and picked out my shooting lane. Crabman goes behind a big oak and I draw. the deer stops. Then the 6 point comes up and all I can see is Crabman's rack and the 6 point as they fight for about a minute. I finally let down, re-range the distance(41 yards) and hook the release up again. A couple of squirrels started to fight and ran right through all the does. This caused the does to bounce off a few yards. I knew I wouldn't have much time and came to full draw when the does were bouncing around. Immediately Crabman took 2 steps out from behind the tree and is now quartering away at 42 yards. I settle the pin and squeeze the trigger. The Nockturnal looked like good shot placement but it is hard to tell at 42 yards. We find brown blood and guts at the point of impact. This is expected on a shot that is quartering fairly hard. Temps are 30degrees and I decide to back out and track in day light in the morning. Dad and I are on the trail at 7:30 and by 8:10 the blood trail had led us to the deer. The Grim Reaper 1 3/4" 100grain entered just in front of the ham and exited just behind the opposite front shoulder. Processing the deer revealed a devastating wound channel that took out intestines, stomach and one lung. The deer traveled less than 100 yards in one of the fastest death runs I have ever witnessed. This is my 6th deer in two season with Grim Reaper 1 3/4" 100grain heads and I could not imagine using anything else. I have used Muzzy's and Thunderheads and Rages and nothing leaves a blood trail like Grim Reapers! ![]() The picture gives you an idea of the entry. The arrow passed through at 42 yards and the fletching must have stopped it because 8 inches of the arrow was left in the deer. I never found the other piece with the broadhead. He must have busted it off while running since the exit was right against his shoulder Bow setup for those that are interested in specs Mathews Z7 27" @70lbs Carbon Express Maxima 350 Grim Reaper 1 3/4" 100gr Razortip |
