Default Crossbow Experience

Hello, I'm new here and was wondering if anyone has any experience with shooting or helping someone set up a crossbow with Stinger/Buzzcuts.

I am disabled because of a bout with brain cancer and in the past used Magnus heads with my Darton Viper and had great luck with them (they are the standard 125gr 4 bladed steel vented heads.) They don't fly so well with my x-bow though but was wondering if anyone could recommend using Stinger/Buzzcut heads with experience here.

Hi Fullquiver (love your avitar pic by the way),

Which bow are you using? We use Exacls in testing and I have been toting a Horton Vision this hunting season quite a bit.

There are getting to be more options in arrows nowadays for crossbows and that chages weights a bit depending ont he bow. Most guys using the carbon shafts with heavy inserts are shooting 100 grain and on aluminums 125 on a 2219 and 100 on 2216 shafts.

I've been tyring several different shafts and just got some Armid KV's in to work with. I've been shooting the Stinger/Buzzcuts and Snuffer SS quite a bit. I would have to say the main issue I've come across is on the bows that need a moon nock and the fletching alignment so you don't have a vane dragging one side of the barrel channel.

So what's your set up like?

Default Horton

I'm shooting a Horton Explorer 150Hd with Horton matched weight mx carbon arrows with the moon nocks. It shoots lights out with some older zwickey broadheads I have, the 4 bladed eskimos (135gr total weight) I believe. The arrows have brass inserts but I have read and been told that 18-20% foc is good for x-bows so am looking for something at least 125gr or more.( plus I like having more weight on my arrows as it quiet's down my bow considerably) BTW the bow shoots about 270fps with 125gr field points.

I like the Zwickey's but they are kind of hard to sharpen for me with that short bleeder in the way. Besides I have always liked Magnus heads. I don't quite know what you mean about arrows dragging in the channel as when my nocks are set against the string the fletching seems pretty well centered. Maybe I need to look closer though.

What I have been finding in the commercially made arrows for the moon nocks is the cock vane or vane that rides in the channel is not consistently indexed with the moon nock. Sometimes its off bad and will cause fliers and if bad enough a partial dryfire. Yes please do check them.

I've been messing with a tone of arrow combo's this year out of crossbows and I don't see anything to worry about FOC that much. I just stick to what is flying well and that seems to be different for different shafts. Out of that bow the 125 would be ideal with the Horton carbons, you could even go to 150 grains if you like on that shaft. I have been using 125 Buzzcuts to hunt with this year out of my Horton.

Have you had any luck with those buzzcuts out of your x-bow. Also is there any noticable difference in performance between your setup with carbon or aluminum arrows with the 100gr or 125gr Buzzcut/Stingers. Have you tried Snuffers out of your setup yet if so how did they do? What shaft/head combo has worked best for you?

Sorry, I'm just new to this x-bow game and have tons of questions. I do know that I want to stick with Magnus style heads of some sort though.

I'm shooting 2219's out of it. I bought a bunch of different carbons but am having a straightness issue with them and only a few are shooting in a group.

I also shot big old snuffers but I re-fletched with five inch feathers for them. I'm getting very tight groups with the Buzzcuts and I really don't notice much of a difference between 100 or 125 grains till about 35 yards but thats about as far as I'm going to shoot at a deer anyway.
