Default Sharpening wear

Woody,
Can you tell me about the average amount of resharpens a magnus head can take before it is changing the weight enough to notice?

Depends on how you sharpen. If you strop it will take a long time and you will get more use out of it. Guys that use files will only sharpen 5-6 times before they notice.

I have had a ton of people ask me that question so I felt I needed to ask. Now...I know. What is the longest stretch you have used one Magnus head?

The longest stretch? Going on 15 years and still packing it. I've done several videos on sharpening but will do some more this spring and show you guys some tricks but you really get the most value out of two blades with it.

For the guys that use the files after say 5 sharpenings, what kind of weight would you expect the BH to weigh? Just curious.

Again, that depends on the individual. You give Booner a file, he's gonna put some elbow grease on it and get to it.

If you go light with it you would only take 2-5 grains at a time sharpening with a file but some will take 10-15 on the same job. I've hit heads on a strop after shooting through targets and taken less than a half a grain to get them back to popping hair.

I haven't weighed them before and after, but I did once shoot a big Magnus I's through a deer then hit it just once with a file going from the ferrule out to raise a slight burr, and once going toward the ferrule on the other side to take the burr off, stropped it on my belt, and shaved hair off of my arm. Couldn't have taken off much weight.

Stropping is a great aid in sharpening, especially when using a compound designed to cut steel like Herb's Yellowstone. It really gets them sharp while removing as little as possible. Guys that just keep going and going with the file can remove a lot. If they are not maintaining the angle very well it can get to be a lot.

But there is always the excuse "I ment to do that, it streamlines it for better penetration."

Booner, you got "Break an anvil with a rubber mallet" written all over ya.

But it is a requirement for testing heads.

Something tells me that I'm like Booner I'd rather oversharpen the blade than undersharpen it. But that's just me.
