Default Grim reaper...right?!

Hi there.

I'm new on this forum and i'm writing from across the Atlantic, Portugal.

I mainly hunt wild boars, and it seams to me that our European wild boars can be much tuffer than the american hog's.

I started last year hunting with a bow and my set up was a Martin Firecat at 29" and 65lb, Easton Axis Nano 400 and NAP thunderhead 125.
This year i bought a Bowtech destroyer 350, and i'm shooting already 72lb at 28,5".

The thunderhead worked quite well but every time it pass tru and hit the ground the tip got bent.
I've changed to Muzzy MX-3 and it works just fine. Then I got interested in mechanical's and bought the Inverter bh. Soon i realized it wasn't tuff enough to wild boars so i only shot fallow deer with it.
Now I've ordered some Grim reaper's 125 gr, a pack of RFA Phoenix and some VAP arrows.

Do you think the GR will work fine on big tuff animals?

Appreciate all the help i can get. It is hard to talk to someone in Portugal about these things. We are only 180 bowhunter's in all the country... eheheh

Yes, the Grim Reaper should hold up well to the hogs. They are tough. The RFA Phoenix is also super tough as it is made of tool grade steel. Good choices.

I shot a 160 lb boar on the scapula with the muzzy mx-3 a few months ago.

Here's the result:

They are hard as steel...

Thanks for the reply

Nice pig there. Now, on the the issue at hand. I am by no means bashing Muzzy, but Muzzy broadheads are not for me. Maybe it was a bad batch, string of bad luck...Maybe even bad shot placement, and if so, I will surely take the blame. But, the one truth I can say is that after shooting two deer with Muzzy broadheads and finding that the blades broke off on impact, not to mention very little penetration, I have not used Muzzy broadheads since. Now maybe thats just me, but I have no faith in them. Having faith in your abilities and faith in your equipment is part of the hunt as well. And thats when I discovered Slick Tricks and Grim Reaper broadheads. They are both tough and have performed flawlessly, even on marginal shots(and some of that is luck, no doubt). I don't think you can go wrong with either of those or the RFA Phoenix. There are many good heads out there, but you have to find the ones that you trust.

Well, what happened I donīt know, but I got the feeling that if that shot was taken with my old thunderhead, it would not as gone trough the bone, even if just a little like this!

I is also true that I hit the worst part of the bone, right at the thicker end.

Iīm looking forward to try them GR and RFA...

Picture of the bone hit:

It was quite a bang.

I also agree that to try as many as we can is the best way to get what fits you, but the problem is that in Portugal, either you order from the US or you won't find that much variety.

Even so I will organize an event among bow hunters so we can try each others broadheads and get a better feeling of what is good and what is not.

P.S. - Sorry about my English writing, as in the "tuff" word!

I've had poor experiences with muzzy myself. As for the RFA Pheonix I shot it into a cinder block, 2 by 4, through a 1/4 inch ply wood, and into a tree. The broadhead is unusable now, but only because when i cut it out of the tree i hit it several times with the axe I was using. I'm confident it would still be shootable had I not done that. THose things are the superman of broadheads. As for GRs I really want to try them after all of the good things I've heard.

I'm looking forward to shoot the RFA Phoenix and the GR's.

I must say all the boars i've shoot with the muzzy, they all died, but those blades keep being bent and i've not got so many pass trough's.

I'm hopping my next set up (VAP + RFA or GR) will help me on that!

Keep us posted, I am sure that there are plenty of pigs that have been killed with a reaper and I want to see how they do for you.

I sure will! I hope that in January I'll be able to post some photos of those actions.

Hi there,

The GR worked just fine. The pig was not big but it was plenty to see the GR working.

It is written in Portuguese, but here are some images of my hunt, just for fun:

Thank's for everything

Thank's.

It was a great opportunity to film such animals.

If I had an extra hand I would had film the shot...

I have had issues with muzzies as well. I use slick trick trick mags for the fixed blade heads and Grim Reapers for the mech. heads these days. I've shot alot of them over the years and these two deliver.

I can't complain about the Grim Reapers at all. I'm leaning hard towards using the Slick Tricks for a fixed head.
