Default Spitfire

I shoot Spitfire 100's and am very satisfied. I am curious to know how many others are shooting Spitfires? My curiosity is driven by the fact that I don't see a lot of people posting that they use Spitfires, on any forum for that matter(mostly on AT). Only that they have shot them and liked them.

Over on the AT forum, I read a lot of posts regarding that they are trustworthy, durable, solid, fly great, etc, etc, etc. Why don't more people shoot them then?

Buck I used them a few years back and loved them..I would not turn fellow hunters away from the spitfires either, man did they leave some gaping holes.LOL..I remember seeing something stating that some hunters were not getting the blades to open up on impact. Not sure if this turned some away or not.. I never had any problems with mine.. Just like all the talk about the Rages..But me I love them... But now Im using Rage 2 blades.. No reason i switched just wanted to try something new and I am very pleased so far with the Rages..

If I recall, and I am getting old, so my recall is busy sometimes, the problem is supposed to be poor penetration and glancing shots on hard downward angle shots. As you know, the tip of a spitfire is kind of a mix between a conical and a trocar tip. I think people were blaming the rounded hip of the tip....hmmmm....hip of the tip...kinda catchy, for the glancing shots. Whether that is true or not I can not confirm, or deny. I would assume they just got caught up in the argument. The reason I say that is because I've shot them alot and loved them. I still love them, and I've never had a problem.

New is good, sometimes. These were my first mechanicals. I tried rage, but wasn't satisfied with the flight. Spitfires were just better. I agree with the gaping holes. I have not had any failures. I have buddies who shoot them, and they swear by them too. I will trial Reapers though, just for a "change."

What makes you want to try the reaper?

No specific reason really, other than I believe in technology and change. If you get too comfortable, you may overlook something that could give you an advantage. We certainly know that while bowhunting whitetails, every advantage we can get is helpful. I have read great threads on Grim Reapers and it has peaked my interest. They appear to be simple in design, and rock solid. I've never held one in my hand though. Not sure if I'll stray from trusty Spitfire, but Reapers are worth a look for me. (plus, their name is more sexy)

Yet more supporting argument for me to at least try Reapers. No frowns towards Spitfire though.

Length of time traveled from shot to death says more for shot placement unless a head fails.

I tried Reapers, new I'd imagine they're ok, but the set I got one blade on one of the heads just plain would not click like the others and I always got a flier from the get go. I messed with the rings or whatever and still couldn't get it to stick. Sometimes on the target they would also open 1, 2, or all 3 blades. Just made me nervous LOL. Other than that the heads seemed great.

I'm trying Tekans now and they are consistent each time.

I tried the Spitfires and they seemed ok, but they just didn't do it for me. Worried about the rounded ends and short tip.

I had a buddy that shot spitfires and loved them. No complaints, as he killed both deer and hogs with them. However, I was using Reapers and he picked up that mythbusters dvd by Reaper and watched it. He bought a pack of reapers after that and also made his dad and wife switch to them, lol. In my opinion the spitfire is a good head, but I believe the Reaper has EVERYTHING the spitfire has, plus about 2 or 3 well engineered "technology" advantages. It's like the Reaper is a newer, better version of the spitfire, and on steroids.

I was with my cousin last year videoing his hunt. He shot a doe with one a little bit back, but not bad. It took us 4.5 hours to track her because 2 out of the 3 blades did not deploy. The entry and exit holes were only about the size of a dime He switched over to Reapers after that.

Been using spitfires for years. Last year I swapped to the cut on contact tip spitfire. Only lost one deer and I think it was a low shot or brisket. Jumped the buck after 40 yards and followed blood for a total of 600 yards. Never found him or the arrow. Think it was just a bad shot and I should have gave him more time, but I heard him go down at 40 yards and thought it was a good shot. Took up the trail in 15 minutes. Bad idea on my part.
Also had a very impressive experience. Shot a buck quartering away hard. Hit him high on the last rib where I wanted and buried the arrow to the fletchings. Deer went about 70 yards. Had penetrated into the opposite sholder and broke it but no exit. Thats a lot of penetration with a 70# 27in dl bow. 15 yard shot though.
Also shot 2 lil bucks with the same set up this year at 40 yards. Both went thru the shoulder and hit the opposite shoulder with no exit. Good blood trails on both under 100 yards.
Can't complain about that! Tried the rage 3 blade on a hog and didn't like the results. Little to no blood trail on a pass thru liver shot. wsent about 70 yards. Blades didn't open on entrance and not much on exit. I think it was the recall set, but I didn't want to chance it on a deer. Killed a few hogs with spitfires and they looked like they were hit with a machette.
Still faithful to the spitfires but reapers would be my second choice.
