Trey shot his first deer with a bow. It was probably 105-110 pounds field dressed. Not big, but a lot we see are smaller, they are pretty small here in SW OK this year with the drought and nothing to eat.
Double lung shot, a little back and high, but it got the job done. The 100 grain Thunderhead blew threw her easily. I was shocked how far she went, probably 150 yards.

Congrats to your son. He'll always remember it. Thumbs up on the shot too, especially if he was elevated above the deer. Looks like a bullseye to me. Seems like lung shot does usually run over 100 yards full speed and don't look back as compared to bucks that typically stop 40 yards after the shot, look around and fall over.

No tree stand, it was from a ground blind. He was sitting down and the arrow passed thru her and went another 20+ yards. I was surprised to see it go that far after busting up one rib and cutting another.
Blood trail was kind weak but it might have been the shot placement. After hitting an open field drops were few and far between. On a hunch we guessed where she went and by God she was right there waiting on us. I'm just glad it was daytime. She might have been coyote bait if it was at night. |

Outstanding trophy for a beginning bowhunter. All things in bowhunting don't go as planned. I remember the "buck fever" I used to get. I miss that. It is definitely part of the experience and reward of harvesting and animal to put steaks in the skillet! Just what every young person needs now days.

Thanks guys, we are both new to it just this year. We decided to try archery for a long season and all the excitement we had heard about. We are getting both. I've made it a point to take him and let him get his deer first. Success, now it it is the old man's turn to get the shakes at full draw!
