Thanks for the great idea stan, turned out great and cost me less than $12.00 to buy everything and an hour to build. If i wouldn't have used red oak and stainless hardware i could have built it a ton cheaper but i have enuff stuff left to build a second jig. Sharpened one of my phoenix heads in no time.

Great job! I have been telling myself that I need to do that but don't get around to it.

Dang LCA, nice work! Kind of a fun project isn't it? I've built a couple of them now because we offer them on the website, but I really think people should build their own. It's a fun project, and like you said simple to do. Are you using a set of rod and stones with it, or a chainsaw file? I'll post a couple of pics tonight if I've got time showing how you can set it up to do all your knives as well, and another deal you can make for a couple of bucks that will make sharpening super fast.

Hey Chris, here's a quick video I did of how to modify your jig so you can do knives and two-blade heads as well.
YouTube - 2bladejig.wmv I also made a better sharpening rod, but I think I gave it to my father-in-law. I'll see if I can't get it back and take a pic of it for you too. It was cheap to make and better than using what I had. |

Hey Chris, sorry it took me so long to get these pics to you...busy!
Anyway, I cut a three sided block of black walnut at 60 degree angles to make a triangle that was four inches long or so and an inch per side. I drilled a hole in the end to accept a female 8-32 screw insert that would take a section of my gun cleaning rod. Then I bought a set of cheap diamond stones with the plastic handles from Woodcraft. The stones are on metal and a little over two inches by a little less than an inch. I ripped them off of the plastic handles and epoxied them to the wood block. Now when I use this all I have to do rotate from coarse to medium to fine without taking the rod out of the guide. Works really well and is a little faster than switching out stones and doesn't take up as much space. Here's pics, ![]() ![]() ![]() Let me know if you've got any questions. |
