A while back we ran a "One broadhead contest" to see who could take the most game with a single Phoenix broadhead. That contest was won by Steve Casselman and in his generosity he decided that rather than accept the prize of a pack of Phoenix, t-shirt and decal he wanted to donate them in some way. He and I talked and came up with this.
In an effort to get youngsters into the sport of bowhunting we thought that maybe you all could nominate a deserving young person who is just getting into the sport of bowhunting who could use some broadheads in the coming season. We can give it a month or so and then I'll have Steve pick from the nominees at random and we'll send them the prize. We're hoping that the members here know some young hunters who really could use some heads to hunt with this year. I think we could keep this up until the end of April. Steve, a huge thank you is in order for your generousity and willingness to pay it forward to someone who is just getting started in this great sport. My hat's off to you, buddy. To nominate a youngster maybe you could just post a first name and quick bit about them (please don't post first and last names). When the time comes for a drawing the winning nominater can PM me an address. Thanks! Last edited by Red Feather Archery; 04-06-2011 at 07:40 AM. |

That's incredibly generous! My son, Brendan, is just getting into archery, but I doubt he will be ready to bowhunt this season. He just received a Mission Menace for Christmas/birthday, and the weather is just now getting nice enough that he can practice. In fact, he is the reason I'm getting back into archery, as he decided that he wants to bowhunt instead of rifle hunt. We're headed to the pro shop on Saturday to get his peep set right (the "pro" shop we bought the bow from didn't come close to getting it right).

Well, not only am I taking my 11y.o. to get his peep set, but now I'll be taking my 12y.o. and 9y.o., who both want to shoot. They'll have to share a bow, so it will have to be either a Razor Edge, Menace, Bear Apprentice, or Craze. I'm leaning toward the Craze so that my 6.5y.o. could even shoot it (he's strong enough to pull back 15lbs, and has a 19" draw length). No matter which one I get, I'll have a kisser button installed and get two different sights (one for each boy). It will probably mean two sets of arrows, too. At least this way if one of them quits, I won't be stuck with an extra bow.
Is it wrong to be jealous of my kids? My three oldest may have their bows before mine arrives! Last edited by roosclan; 04-08-2011 at 09:32 PM. |

Thanks for posting this Stan. I could think of no better way to use a wonderful gift such as this. Actually, why should I take this great gift, when I won the contest for doing something that I love. It was a great contest you came up with Stan, so you deserve the credit here.
So let's get some names coming in and a short blurb of why the youth wants to be involved with archery. This is going to be interesting, and it will be difficult to choose a winner. Might have to do the good old names in a hat blind draw, but we'll see. Thanks again to Stan and Broadheadtalk.com for giving us all a place to congregate and talk archery. Steve

He doesn't explain why he likes archery, but he loves it. I think he got hooked on sticks & strings during summer Webelo camp for Cub Scouts. He did really well at archery each time they went to the range, and came home declaring that he didn't want to rifle hunt for deer... he wanted to bowhunt! I told him that he needed to learn how to get within 100yds of deer before he got within 20yds of deer, so I think I've convinced him to do both... for now. Our school's counselor is my oldest's piano teacher, and her husband used to run an archery shop in MN. He shoots competitively now in the senior class, and he volunteered to teach my son the basics of archery. Brendan took to it like a duck to water. Now that it's warming up, I need to get him back over there for more lessons (and my 9y.o.). Oddly enough, he's the reason I'm getting back into archery after a 22-year hiatus. How can I teach him to bowhunt, if I don't do it myself? |

Definitely sounds like he has the bug for sure. Good luck to your son Roosclan.

How old is too old to be eligible? Is a broke college student worth mentioning. I live in Athens, GA and am attending The University of Georgia. Just got a bow again but no broadheads. Paying rent and tuition is about all I can afford right now. I gun hunt deer, hogs and bear. I'd love to hit em with a stick and string though, bet a black bear would love to be downed with a phoenix.

bttrotter,
"Youngsters" are getting older to me everyday Throw your name in. I believe the intent as Steve and I discussed it was for him to donate the prize he won in a contest to fan the flame of interest in someone elses archery career. A very noble gesture on his part that helps to perserve this sport we all love.
