Last night, I was fletching a whole bunch of arrows with my Helix Jig and everything I was adding another 2" Blazer vane, I had to glance over at my Bitzenburger jig, not doing anything. I miss shooting wooden arrows with a glue on two or three blade broadhead. I remember the first time I let a Port Oxford cedar shaft tipped with a three blade snuffer fly at a black bear, it was as if time had slowed down enought for me to see that arrow fly and dissapear through my bear.
Then I glanced over at the magnificent wooden arrows Stan Mercer of Red Feather Archery built me and that is what I am doing today, shooting my longbow and enjoying some good time with my traditional gear. That mystical wooden arrow flight, something I want to have with me till I am no longer able to walk on this planet, my thoughts this morning.

I have had that exact feeling here lately. I started shooting cedar arrows that I sanded, stained, dipped, fletched and tapered all myself several years ago when I first got into traditional archery. Over the last couple years I had switched to shooting GT Traditional arrows because I liked the ease of tuning them. I guess I got lazy and went for the easy way. This year I got the fever back and I have bought some cedar shafts from 3Rivers and started fletching away with my old JoJan fletcher. I even dug out my taper tool and my feather choppers. I have been shooting every evening with the Black Widow and I have some 150 gr Phoenix glue on's coming from Red Feather Archery. I have picked out 6 matched grain shafts and have them fletched up with some red and traditional barred feathers with red Bohning Classic nocks to match the killer looks of the Phoenix broadhead.
I have a feeling I will be letting some wood fly myself before the end of bow season this fall.

Wow I feel like I am in Ted the Nug's present. Or maybe I am on Trad Gang
Seriously, I can almost understand where you are coming from but when I hear everything else on this site it makes me think everyone only wants the latest and greatest thing out there (of course other than me, since I still use aluminum arrows and RM premier head). I went to training wheels on my bow in the old days and will never go back. I also don't want a 1957 Chevy. But I love hearing you guys and gals talking this old stuff too. ![]() Keep it going. |

Shep I would definitely say you have the itch. The biggest thing is I don't know where to start to get a bow that fits me. I need to go to the pro shop and see if the guy knows anything about trad gear. If not I will have a lot of questions for all of you.

Shep, that last picture you posted got me smilling !!!!! I know now without a shadow of a doubt that your a traditional archer
Made me smile again !!!Question, so over the course of your traditional archery career, what shifts in the broadhead industry did you find the most beneficial towards the traditional bowhunter? What are some of your favorite heads and why?

The first bloodied arrow there looked like this to start. Cut, sealed(no stain), tapered, fletched myself. They are chundoo not cedar. The broken fancy arrow is cedar. I do love wood. There's just nothing like a freshly broken cedar on a blood trail.
